Dinner at Blakes Restaurant...

As part of our stay at Hard Days Night Hotel Liverpool, we dined at Blakes Restaurant*, which is located within the hotel. The restaurant has an entrance adorned with lights and the colour scheme is neutral with black and white images adorning the wall, whilst the open space has a bar area on one side and an open kitchen at the back.

We were warmly welcomed and seated in the centre of the large dining room, where we perused the menu and ordered a glass of wine to start the evening. We enjoyed poppy seed rolls with butter and I selected winter vegetable soup as my starter, which was hearty and delicately spiced with plenty of flavour. This was a warming soup with a rustic and homemade quality.

My dining companion chose an elegantly plated pork and apple terrine with cider and blackberry chutney as his starter. The terrine was complemented by the sharpness of the chutney and crunchy   Melba toast.

My main course of lemonade battered fish, chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce was a perfect plate of comfort food. The batter was golden with a tang of citrus from the lemonade and the fish was flaky whilst the chunky chips were cooked to perfection. I eat fish and chips regularly and this was a very good main course, with quality ingredients and a plentiful portion size.

My dining companion devoured his homemade beef burger with chips and relish, with an expression of joy, declaring it to be 'burger perfection' when he finished. This was a great burger, well presented and served in a brioche style bun with chunky chips and tangy yet sweet relish. I think sometimes burgers can be over adorned with extras, whereas the simplicity of this dish allowed each of the flavours to shine in their own right, which is always a winning formula.

We shared two desserts, chocolate and hazelnut caprice with raspberry ripple ice cream and apple crumble cake with apple and caramel scented custard. The caprice was rich and indulgent with an intense chocolate flavour and subtle hazelnut which went well with the ice cream whilst the apple crumble cake was a good contrast, with the light spongy cake delivering a hit of fresh apple which sat well with the fragrant custard.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Blakes Restaurant, which has a host of modern European dishes and comfort food on the menu. The aesthetic of the restaurant feels classic and understated, with a pleasant ambience and friendly and attentive service.  This is a good choice of restaurant which has something on the menu for everybody and the location makes it ideal for lunch or dinner when exploring Liverpool.
