A break at Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa...

The luxury four star Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa* has long had a reputation as a perfect oasis of calm where lucky guests can relax and unwind against a beautiful backdrop of Wirral scenery. Situated in rolling countryside just 20 minutes from the many attractions of Chester and Liverpool  the luxurious hotel boasts a range of facilities such as a spa, swimming pool and a choice of dining venues including the relaxed Times Brasserie and the gastronomic pleasures of the fine dining offered at The Lawns restaurant, which has the incredibly talented chef Matt Worswick at the helm.
I love the chance to get away from it all, so when I had the opportunity to stay at Thornton Hall I was delighted to pack my bags and set off for a lovely break. I had been to Thornton Hall before when I worked as a photographer there, so I was eager to experience the hotel for myself.  We were immediately welcomed warmly by the friendly reception staff; they left no detail overlooked and even offered to order us some newspapers for the next morning. The entrance to the hotel creates a wonderful first impression with fluttering flags outside and sweeping corridors within which give way to the amazing wood carvings on the walls and staircase which depict Aesop's Fables beneath a glittering stained glass ceiling.

We were promptly whisked to our delightful executive room, with a huge king sized bed, luxurious bathroom, flat-screen tv and comfortable armchair. I was delighted to see there was a desk too, so that I could sneak in some work whilst I was away! There was a large bottle of mineral water and a well-stocked tea and coffee area with a coffee  machine which came equipped with a choice of tanstalising options such as Hazelnut Latte and French Vanilla. There was even Earl Grey which is a favourite of mine and little flapjacks and shortcakes which were soon devoured! The bathroom was chic and modern, with both a bath and shower and a selection of goodies such as shampoo, shower gel and moisturiser were provided.  There was a wonderful view from our room over rolling countryside, where we could see pheasants and squirrels enjoying the sunshine!

It was only a flying visit to the room, because we immediately grabbed our swimming gear and headed for the pool. I absolutely love swimming, so I could not wait to try out the 20 metre indoor pool. We were welcomed at the health club reception and provided with fluffy towels. There is a host of amazing facilities to choose from within the award winning spa including a gym and even a Rasul mud treatment room! Poolside, there is a sauna, steam room and snow cave as well as a large Jacuzzi and two further outdoor hot tubs where people were sipping champagne and soaking up the afternoon sunshine. The pool is huge and flanked by amazing Grecian style pillars. I plunged straight into the lovely waters and had a great time swimming for the next hour. I always find that swimming really clears my mind and relaxes me, and I enjoyed the Jacuzzi, steam room and the amazing snow cave which is a great place to cool down after heating up in the steam room!
There is a relaxing area next to the pool where you can lie back and read the newspaper too, the perfect way to unwind during a break.

After our swim, we were transported to the lodge by golf buggy for a relaxing massage. There is a host of pampering treatments on offer at Thornton Hall, including manicures, facials and massages. This was my first time having a massage and the therapist was very friendly and talked me through the whole thing. It was so relaxing and she used fragrant Elemis oils to work all the knots of tension out of my neck, back and shoulders. I felt so revived afterwards and I could not wait to head back to the pool for another long swim before dinner (we headed to The Lawns Restaurant for our dinner, which I will talk about in my next post because the meal was so amazing that I want to share it with you in detail!)

After dinner, we had a lovely walk in the grounds then headed back to our lavish room to relax over after dinner coffee. I had the best night’s sleep ever in the luxurious bed which was so comfortable, and the next morning I woke up early ready to enjoy breakfast and another long swim before departure.  After a wonderful dinner the night before, breakfast was another foodie heaven! There was a vast room arrayed with pastries, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, cold meats, cheese and toast. In the far end of the room, there was a large selection of hot foods too such as bacon, sausages, eggs (fried and scrambled) baked beans, fried bread and tomatoes. I felt spoiled for choice just looking at the delicious array of goodies, and I enjoyed some cereal and pastries followed by eggs, baked beans and toast. My partner had a cooked breakfast and also some fruit and yoghurt and we both felt revived by the pot of rich coffee which was immediately brought to us.The tables were beautifully set and our every need was looked after by the lovely staff. It was a pleasure to dine in the beautiful dining room of The Lawns Restaurant again, which boasts stunning chandeliers and an intricately carved fireplace and panelling.

After that delicious and leisurely breakfast, I headed to the pool again for a lovely long swim for the next one and a half hours. Sadly after that, it was finally time to pack our bags and bid a fond farewell to our sumptuous room and to Thornton Hall. We had an absolutely wonderful time and I would recommend this hotel to anybody. The peaceful setting makes it ideal for a break away from the stress of everyday life and there is everything you could possibly need at the hotel, from the swimming pool and health club facilities, to the beauty spa and the choice of relaxed or fine dining. This makes Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa the perfect location for either a short break or a longer stay. There is a wide range of packages and spa breaks available and they cater for weddings too. There really is something to suit everybody. We left feeling that we had completely recharged our batteries and we felt ready to face a busy week ahead. Thank you so much to everybody involved in making our stay so lovely and we will definitely be returning soon!
