Archies Liverpool...

I love food, something which may well have become apparent by now due to the content I post! The thing is I associate food with my mood, sometimes I am in the mood for a candlelit three course dinner, sometimes the mood for fish & chips by the sea, a homemade roast dinner or a steaming bowl of penne in my favourite Italian restaurant. There is one particular mood which I think most food lovers can identify with, and that is burger mood! Sometimes nothing else hits the spot quite like a towering burger and some crispy fries, preferably accompanied by a milkshake. Burgers come in many different forms nowadays, from the everyday high street fast food purveyors to the ‘gourmet’ burgers offered at more mid-range restaurants. There are also more inventive creations around now, such as burgers in a doughnut bun and more fine dining spins on the classic such as wagyu beef burgers or truffle mac n’ cheese burgers. I was definitely in a burger mood last week which was just as well as I was invited to check out Archies which is a fun diner-style burger joint which has already got two successful venues in Manchester and has recently come to Liverpool.

Archies has become renowned for its amazing milkshakes and its tasty burgers which are a favourite with celebrities as well as the loyal customer base it has already gathered.
Upon arrival I was immediately cheered by the retro American aesthetic of the restaurant, with a counter downstairs with a brightly lit menu board and an area where you can see all the milkshakes being prepped. We headed upstairs into a spacious restaurant area, with white walls and bright pink accents including booth seats and neon signs. The menu was full of options but I was immediately drawn to the chicken Cheetos burger. This consisted of tender chicken in a crispy coating topped with Cheetos, hot cheese sauce, lettuce and Cajun mayonnaise. The chicken was delicious and the Cajun mayonnaise gave a fiery kick whilst the brioche bun and Cheetos added the ideal finishing touches.

My dining companion chose the Route 66 burger with bacon, American cheese, tomato, lettuce, red onions and barbecue sauce. This was exactly as you imagine a classic cheeseburger should be, with a thick juicy patty, plenty of toppings and a golden brioche bun and flavours which sat well together.

We shared an order of chilli cheese fries, stringy fries topped with a thick and hearty homemade chilli and grated cheese. The sweet potato fries were equally irresistible, thick crinkle cut fries which were perfect with the burgers.

You cannot have a traditional diner experience without having a milkshake with your burger and fries, so we selected two from the extensive list of milkshakes on the menu. My Oreolicious, with Oreos, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and crushed Oreos was a thick and creamy creation which had plenty of chocolate, whilst my dining companion chose the equally indulgent Million Dollar with Ferrero Rocher, strawberries, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and Cadbury’s Flake.

We could not leave without being tempted by the dessert menu, so we chose two to share. The Eminem waffle was fluffy and light, topped with crispy M&M’s and served with ice cream. It took us a while to finish this sweet treat but we conquered it together! The second dessert of chocolate brownie explosion sundae was a delight with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, crushed brownie and popping candy. This was a dreamy sundae and the popping candy added a fun touch.

Archies does what it does really well, it is a fun and casual dining experience which is relaxing after a busy day. It is clear that plenty of thought has gone into the design, branding and menu development and the result is a place which feels fresh and different. The food is nothing like the generic fast food served at the chain brands we all recognise and the use of quality fresh produce is reflected in how good everything tastes. It is definitely an ideal place to head for when you are in the mood for a burger and a milkshake, in contemporary and fun surroundings. We had a great time, service was efficient and friendly and the vaguely 1950’s design aesthetic made me smile. I can imagine that Archies will expand with a lot more venues as there is definitely a gap in the market for a restaurant which serves satisfying burgers at realistic prices. I am looking forward to dropping in again now I have discovered the chicken Cheetos burger!
